Call for Participation: 5th Anniversary Conference, May 26, 2012
“The Power to Empower with English"

MEXTESOL TAMPICO cordially invites anyone interested in participating as a speaker at our next conference to submit a proposal for a presentation.
BENEFITS:

SUBMISSION PROCESS AND DEADLINES
Please send an e-mail with your proposal to lety_velaglz@yahoo.com.mx.
All proposals should be received by 6pm (central time) Monday, April 9, 2012. When a proposal is received, we will send an e-mail confirming receipt of the proposal. If you don’t receive this e-mail, then it is important to contact us in order to check that it was received. The MEXTESOL Tampico Executive Committee will meet and decide which proposals meet the criteria and will inform participants by April 16, 2012
HOW TO PREPARE A PROPOSAL
All proposals should have four parts: a 10-word title, a 50-word abstract, your 50 word biodata and brief description of the session. This information will appear in the promotional material, so it should be carefully written and proofread.
The title will
- accurately reflect the content.
- be clear to the intended audience.
- contain no more than 10 words.
Sample Titles
- Digital Storytelling: Blended Learning at its Best (7 words)
- Communicative exams with a storyline (5 words)
- Cooperative Learning in ESL (4 words)
Abstract
The abstract describing the session will
- not exceed 50 words.
- not contain references to published works.
- be carefully edited and proofread.
- be written to attract the most appropriate audience to the presentation.
Sample Abstract
CALLing ESL
Computer-assisted language learning (CALL), although widely promoted in education
textbooks and programs, is often problematic for ESL students and teachers. How can ESL teachers distinguish between ineffective and effective CALL activities? How does culture influence CALL? (39 words)
Remember! Participants read abstracts to decide which sessions to attend.
Session Description
The session description will
- not exceed 200 words.
- have a clearly stated purpose.
- include supporting details and examples.
- show there is an appropriate amount of material for the allotted time.
- demonstrate careful editing and proofreading

Slogan Contest - MEXTESOL Tampico 5th Anniversary, Regional Convention, May 26, 2012

The MEXTESOL TAMPICO Executive Committee cordially invites you to participate in the competition of creating a SLOGAN that communicates the main theme of the convention and connects with the purpose of our association.
Note that the theme is "the 5th anniversary" or some other idea that you, the contestant, may have. We are open to ideas! So be creative and send us an email!

GUIDELINES:

PRESENTATION 1: READING FOR YOUNG LEARNERS
Speaker: Ana Lilia Castro Torres
(Instituto Anglo Mexicano)
Bio-data:
From 2004 to 2006, Ana Lilia worked as a bilingual substitute teacher for elementary grades at Amigos Por Vida Public Charter School in Houston, TX. From 2006 to 2008, she served as the Cooperative After School Enrichment (CASE) Program coordinator at the same school. This program provides tutorial services and academic enrichment activities that are designed to help students meet local and state academc standards. She also coordinated activities and researched resources for strategic intervention to increase reading, writing, math and science standardized test scores. With this program, she reported improvement on students' preparation and behavior. As well, she coordinated APV's participation on CASE Kids' Day events where students were given opportunities to work with profressionals in the math, science and technology fields.
In addition, from 2006 to 2008, Ana Lilia attended the Annual After School Partnership Fair and the After School Training Series that included BEST PRACTICE professional training sessions for all experience levels. In 2008, she attended the Creating Love and Logic School Culture Summer Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Currently, Ana Lilia is teaching Grade 5 at Instituto Anglo Mexicano. There she is responsible for the Recreational Reading and Writing Program, and is in charge of tutorial classes for grades 4, 5 and 6.

Speaker: Leticia Vela
Bio-data:
Leticia Vela holds a B.A. in Administration, a certificate for Overseas Teachers of English, TKT certificates from Cambridge ESOL, and a M.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies from Buffalo State University. She worked for The American School of Tampico for 15 years as an English and Spanish teacher, Academic Coordinator, and intructor in the B.A. in Applied Linguistics. When coordinating the Self-Access Learning Center in 2009, it received the TOEFL Library and Resource Center Award. Leticia also received a TESOL Award for International Participation at the 2008 Convention in New York. As a side project, she is presently a thesis advisor and instructor for the Master's in Bilingual Education program at the Universidad Pedagogical Nacional.
